ShapeSure Soft Cornice Stiffener (also known as Skirtex)
Free ShapeSure sample with any other product purchase-- 1 cent S & H
ShapeSure sample without additional purchase-- $1 S&H
This white, non-woven buckram has been used as a stiffener in couch skirts and other upholstery jobs for years. Now ShapeSure has graduated to soft cornices. ShapeSure is light weight, stable, and can be ironed to create sharp corners, such as in valance returns. Cut ShapeSure to fit inside your sewn flat soft cornices to give them extra structure and support. Or use ShapeSure to make smooth, pucker free soft cornices without any sewing. Soft cornices made from ShapeSure are incredibly light weight, versatile, and don't need special equipment to make--as well as have non-flaring returns. (See below for instructions on how to use ShapeSure.)
Sealah or one of the M-tape 350 industrial adhesive tapes is the perfect choice to use with ShapeSure. (Click here to view M-Tape or Sealah No Sew industrial double sided adhesive tapes.)
ShapeSure comes in several lengths--5 yards, 10 yards, 15 yards, 20 yards, 50 yards, and 100 yard bolts. Choose from 18 inch, 26 inch, 30 inch, or 36 inch widths. It is shipped rolled on a cardboard tube and encased in a clear wrapper. ShapeSure should be ironed (with steam) prior to use to make it lay flat and to remove any wrinkles. (Due to the size and weight, this item may be shipped separately from other items ordered, and shipping charges for ShapeSure are in addition to other S&H charges.)

Instructions for using ShapeSure Inside Sewn Soft Cornices and Flat Valances
ShapeSure is great for slipping inside the front part of box-pleated valances or inside returns. Do not place ShapeSure inside pleat folds or wrap ShapeSure around top of board.
Make valance as usual. Measure area for ShapeSure to be inserted. Cut ShapeSure to desired size and shape. Before finishing top of valance, slip ShapeSure piece inside of valance to help smooth out the face and give valance more structure and support.
For returns, press in fold at desired location in ShapeSure piece. Let ShapeSure cool off. Slip ShapeSure piece inside of return.
Instructions for No-Sew Soft Cornices
Converting a sewing pattern to a ShapeSure pattern: The valance style must be flat. Cut out your paper pattern. Cut away the seam allowances from the sides and bottom edges. Cut off the board mounting allowance. What remains is the shape of the front and sides of the valance.
Cutting the ShapeSure: Use a steam iron to press out any wrinkles in the material. Let ShapeSure 'relax' after ironing on a flat surface. If ShapeSure does not lie completely flat, then re-iron product. Using your paper pattern, cut pattern piece out of ShapeSure. (Do not include board mounting allowance or seam allowances in your ShapeSure shape.)
Cutting the blackout lining: Lightly trace around your ShapeSure on the wrong side of your blackout lining*. Cut the bottom edge of lining the same as the traced outline. Cut the lining sides a tiny bit smaller than the traced outline. Cut the top edge of lining 4 inches longer than traced shape.
Cutting the decorator fabric: Center the cut ShapeSure on the wrong side of the decorator fabric. Make sure that any fabric designs are centered for a pleasing appearance. On the sides and bottom edges, cut face fabric approximately 2" larger than your ShapeSure. Leave 4" on top edge of face fabric to board mount the finished cornice. The top fabric will become your mounting flap.
Making the returns: Iron in the return folds into the ShapeSure. Let ShapeSure cool before proceeding to the next step. The returns will be wrapped to shape--meaning that the returns are at 90 degree angles when covering the ShapeSure soft cornice with fabric. Wrap the side edges and bottom edge of face fabric around ShapeSure, clipping curves as needed. Glue or M-tape the wrapped edges to the ShapeSure. Use a high-quality white fabric glue. Do not wrap top edge of face fabric around ShapeSure piece. (Top fabric flap will be stapled to your mounting board.)
Finishing the soft cornice: Wrap any remaining ShapeSure pieces with your decorator face fabric, leaving a top flap of fabric for attaching fabric piece to mounting board. To add purchased or covered cording along the bottom of your soft cornice, glue the cording lip (or seam allowance) to the back bottom edge of the cornice. Check the front lower edge of cornice to make sure cording placement is correct. Cover back of soft cornice with black out lining. Cut blackout lining slightly smaller than your covered ShapeSure piece, again leaving a top flap of fabric. Spread the glue along the outer 1" edge of the rubbery side of the blackout lining, then place blackout lining on back side of ShapeSure soft cornice piece. Smooth blackout lining down on back of ShapeSure soft cornice pieces. For returns, also add a bead of glue along the fold line. (Returns may need the blackout lining trimmed a bit more, so that the blackout lining does not show from the front bottom side edges of the soft cornice.) Finish gluing up the rest of the ShapeSure soft cornice piece. If desired, neatly glue a matching gimp (flat woven braid used in upholstery and draperies) over the edge of the blackout lining.
Mounting soft cornice to board: Cut a 1" X 4" board to your finished window treatment width. After the soft cornice's glue has dried, place top fabric flap of soft cornice piece on top of the board. Align top edge of ShapeSure insert with top of mounting board. Staple fabric flap to top of mounting board. Finish stapling any remaining ShapeSure pieces to the mounting board. Cut a piece of fabric 10" wide and slightly longer than the board. Fold under fabric edges to wrong side of fabric strip. Neatly glue fabric strip to top of the soft cornice to cover up the top staples.
To install your soft cornice to your window: Use L brackets (found at local hardware store) and place those on your wall above your window. Brackets should be all at the same height. Screw brackets to wall using appropriate screws/wall anchors. Then place soft cornice on top of brackets. Screw mounting board to top of L brackets.
Other info: ShapeSure can be ironed to remove wrinkles or can be steamed into your desired shape. Try ShapeSure for creating other fun crafts. Use ShapeSure as a backing when creating three-dimensional needlework projects.
*Blackout lining is the 'rubberized' lining that fully blocks light. You can find blackout linings at your local fabric stores. Thermal linings or partial blackout linings are not recommended for making soft cornices.
